No. HGH frag 176-191 is a small piece of the human growth hormone (HGH) molecule, not growth hormone itself. It contains 16 of growth hormone’s 191 amino acids and does not produce most of the hormone’s effects.
The fragment was studied mainly as a potential obesity treatment, in a modified form known as AOD-9604. Animal studies suggested it could reduce body fat, but larger human trials did not show meaningful weight loss, and it has never been approved as a medicine. This article explains how the fragment differs from full growth hormone, what the research found, and how both are regulated.
What is HGH?
Human growth hormone is a protein made of 191 amino acids. It is produced by the pituitary gland and acts on growth hormone receptors throughout the body.
Many of its effects are carried out indirectly, through a hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), which is produced mainly in the liver in response to growth hormone. Together, growth hormone and IGF-1 influence growth in childhood, muscle and bone, fat metabolism, and blood sugar regulation. Growth hormone tends to increase fat breakdown, but it also opposes the action of insulin, which can raise blood sugar.
Synthetic growth hormone, known as somatropin, is approved for medical conditions such as growth hormone deficiency in children and adults. Our article on HGH (somatropin) covers the full hormone in more detail.
What is HGH frag 176-191?
HGH frag 176-191 is a peptide made of amino acids 176 to 191, the final 16 amino acids at one end of the growth hormone molecule. That is about 8% of the full hormone.
In the 1990s, researchers in Australia investigated whether this region of growth hormone was responsible for the hormone’s fat-burning effects, and whether it could produce those effects without the hormone’s other actions. They developed a modified version of the fragment, with one additional amino acid, called AOD-9604. Most of the research on growth hormone fragments has been conducted with AOD-9604 rather than the unmodified fragment sold online.
How does the fragment differ from HGH?
The difference is not simply one of strength. The fragment and the full hormone act differently in the body.
It does not act like growth hormone
Research on AOD-9604 indicates that, unlike full growth hormone, it does not meaningfully activate the growth hormone receptor or raise IGF-1 levels (Ng et al., 2000). As a result, it does not produce growth hormone’s effects on growth, muscle, bone, or tissue repair.
Its studied effects were limited to fat metabolism
The fragment was designed to isolate one possible action of growth hormone: the breakdown of stored fat. In animal studies, it increased fat breakdown and reduced body fat in obese mice without the blood sugar effects associated with full growth hormone (Heffernan et al., 2001).
Why “fewer side effects” can be misleading
The fragment is often described as having fewer side effects than HGH. This mostly reflects the fact that it does not do what growth hormone does. A substance that lacks growth hormone’s effects will also lack many of its side effects, but that is not the same as being a safer alternative that delivers similar results.
What does research show about fat loss?
The results in animals did not carry over convincingly to humans.
Early human studies of AOD-9604 were small. A larger clinical trial, lasting about six months, was conducted to test it as an obesity treatment. It did not produce significant weight loss compared with placebo, and development of AOD-9604 as an obesity drug was stopped.
In the clinical trials that were conducted, AOD-9604 was generally well tolerated, with side effects similar to placebo (Stier et al., 2013). However, these trials tested the substance under controlled conditions. They do not establish the safety or effectiveness of fragment products sold outside the regulated pharmaceutical supply.
Is HGH frag 176-191 safe?
There is limited human safety information, and much of what exists comes from AOD-9604 trials rather than from the products people actually use.
In a 2024 review for its pharmacy compounding advisory committee, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that the use of AOD-9604 in compounding may raise safety concerns. The FDA cited limited safety information, a potential risk of immune reactions, challenges in characterizing the purity of the peptide, and serious adverse events that may be associated with it, although the cause was not clear (FDA, 2024).
Peptides sold online are not subject to the quality controls required for medicines, so their actual content and purity cannot be confirmed from the label.
Is HGH frag 176-191 legal?
HGH frag 176-191 and AOD-9604 are not approved by the FDA for any medical use, and AOD-9604 is not eligible to be compounded by pharmacies.
Full growth hormone is a prescription medicine, and under US federal law, distributing it for uses other than those approved is illegal. In competitive sport, both growth hormone and its fragments, including AOD-9604 and HGH 176-191, are prohibited at all times under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List (WADA, 2026). For more on how performance-enhancing substances are regulated, see our article on steroid industry regulation.
Why are they often confused?
The fragment is frequently marketed using growth hormone’s name and reputation, often as a “fat-burning HGH” or a cheaper alternative to growth hormone. The shared name suggests a closer relationship than the biology supports.
In reality, the fragment is a small piece of the hormone that was tested for one specific purpose, did not demonstrate meaningful weight loss in larger human trials, and does not reproduce growth hormone’s broader effects.
The bottom line
HGH frag 176-191 is not the same as HGH. It is a 16-amino-acid piece of the 191-amino-acid growth hormone molecule, and research indicates it does not act on the body the way growth hormone does. Its modified form, AOD-9604, reduced body fat in animal studies but did not produce significant weight loss in a larger human trial, and it was never approved as a medicine.
Human safety data are limited, products sold online are unregulated, and the fragment is prohibited in competitive sport. Anyone considering treatment for weight management or hormone-related concerns should speak with a qualified healthcare professional about approved options.
